Vital Involvement in Old Age by Erik H. EriksonW. W. Norton & CompanyErikson's now-famous concept of the life cycle delineates eight stages of psychological development through which each of us progresses. The last stage, old age, challenges the individual to rework the past while remaining involved in the present. The authors begin this work with their theory of life's stages through old age. In Part two, they discuss their interviews with twenty-nine octogenarians, on whom life history data has been collected for over fifty years. Part three is a discussion of the life history of the protagonist in Ingmar Bergman's film Wild Strawberries. In Part four, "Old age in our society", the authors offer suggestions for "vital involvement." Erik H. Erikson is winner of the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award.Beyond the Pool: Life Lessons for a full and rewarding life learned through a lifetime of involvement with swimming. by Mr. R. Neil LaughlinCreateSpaceBeyond the Pool relates lessons in living learned from over sixty-plus years of involvement with swimming as a competitor, coach, teacher, official, parent and observer which he's applied to his professional and personal life. Whether they are called "Life Lessons", "Core Beliefs" or "Bits of Wisdom"; gathered here are various thoughts and ideas that everyone can use to maneuver their way through the various stages of their life journeys. Beyond the Pool is not intended to be a one-time read. It is, rather, a book to be referred to from time-to-time as the world changes and new directions needed. Beyond the Pool is quite simply a beautifully written guidebook for living, not just another book about living. "It's great! Reminds me of Lord Chesterfield's Letters to His Son." S.Campbell, USA "Now I know that not only you can run your life, but you can swim your life too! This book will stay on my bedisde table as a buoy to keep me afloat when things are not easy in life." J-C Huet, France "Brilliant! I started this book as possible reading material for my English language students. I finished it with so much more! My students and I now have a way to go beyond the study of English. Ding Jia You, China The Future is Speculation. The Past is a fleeting Memory. The Presen is Real, but only a flash. Make the Most of It. ENJOY the Moment! Post-Broadcast Democracy: How Media Choice Increases Inequality in Political Involvement and Polarizes Elections (Cambridge Studies in Public Opinion and Political Psychology) by Markus PriorCambridge University PressThe media environment is changing. Today in the United States, the average viewer can choose from hundreds of channels, including several twenty-four hour news channels. News is on cell phones, on iPods, and online; it has become a ubiquitous and unavoidable reality in modern society. The purpose of this book is to examine systematically, how these differences in access and form of media affect political behaviour. Using experiments and new survey data, it shows how changes in the media environment reverberate through the political system, affecting news exposure, political learning, turnout, and voting behavior. The Culture of Critique: An Evolutionary Analysis of Jewish Involvement in Twentieth-Century Intellectual and Political Movements by Kevin MacDonald1st Book LibraryMacDonald provides a theoretical analysis and review of data on the widespread tendency among highly influential, Jewish-dominated intellectual movements to develop radical critiques of gentile culture that are compatible with the continuity of Jewish identification. These movements are viewed as the outcome of the fact that Jews and gentiles have different interests in the construction of culture and in various public policy issues (e.g. immigration policy, Israel). Several of these movements attempt to combat anti-Semitism by advocating social categorization processes in which the Jew/gentile distinction is minimized in importance. There is also a tendency to develop theories of anti-Semitism in which ethnic differences and resource competition are of minimal importance. From the perspective of the intellectual structures developed by these movements, anti-Semitism is analyzed as an indication of psychopathology among gentiles. In some cases, these movements appear to be attempts to develop a fundamental restructuring of the intellectual basis of gentile society in ways conducive to the continued existence of Judaism. Particular attention is paid to Boasian anthropology, psychoanalysis, leftist political ideology and behavior, and the Frankfurt School of Social Research. Each of these movements can be characterized as an authoritarian political movement centered around a charismatic leader who strongly identified as a Jew and who was idolized by his disciples who were also predominantly Jewish. Regarding immigration policy, Jewish political and intellectual activity was motivated less by a desire for higher levels of Jewish immigration than by opposition to the implicit theory that America should be dominated by individuals with northern and western European ancestry. Jewish policy was aimed at developing an America charcterized by cultural pluralism and populated by groups of people from all parts of the world rather than by a homogeneous Christian culture and populated largely by people of European descent. This is a controversial analysis of particular interest to those concerned with evolutionary approaches to human behavior, with Judaica, and with an evolutionary perspective on history and psychology. Ending the Vietnam War : A History of America's Involvement in and Extrication from the Vietnam War by Henry KissingerSimon & SchusterMany other authors have written about what they thought happened -- or thought should have happened -- in Vietnam, but it was Henry Kissinger who was there at the epicenter, involved in every decision from the long, frustrating negotiations with the North Vietnamese delegation to America's eventual extrication from the war. Now, for the first time, Kissinger gives us in a single volume an in-depth, inside view of the Vietnam War, personally collected, annotated, revised, and updated from his bestselling memoirs and his book Diplomacy. Here, Kissinger writes with firm, precise knowledge, supported by meticulous documentation that includes his own memoranda to and replies from President Nixon. He tells about the tragedy of Cambodia, the collateral negotiations with the Soviet Union and the People's Republic of China, the disagreements within the Nixon and Ford administrations, the details of all negotiations in which he was involved, the domestic unrest and protest in the States, and the day-to-day military to diplomatic realities of the war as it reached the White House. As compelling and exciting as Barbara Tuchman's The Guns of August, Ending the Vietnam War also reveals insights about the bigger-than-life personalities -- Johnson, Nixon, de Gaulle, Ho Chi Minh, Brezhnev -- who were caught up in a war that forever changed international relations. This is history on a grand scale, and a book of overwhelming importance to the public record. Bedtime Stories and Book Reports: Connecting Parent Involvement and Family Literacy (Language and Literacy Series) by Catherine Compton-LillyTeachers College PressThis book brings together the newest research on parent involvement and family literacy--two strands of research that rarely exist in conversation with one another. The discussion highlights how race, class, gender, and history serve as potent factors that shape children's school experiences. Each chapter offers portraits of real families and schools that illustrate parents' awareness of their children's school progress, their perceptions of teachers, and their involvement in teaching their children life lessons that extend beyond school achievement. Translating theory into action, this resource extends conversations about parent involvement and family literacy across time and multiple spaces--home, school, church, and community; challenges accepted notions by listening to parents' counter-stories of how they are involved with their children both in and out of school; and highlights the significance of race, class, gender, religion, sexual preference, and history in literacy learning and schooling.
